Stone The Crows!

No, don't. But I just felt like sharing a few things about Ravens, perhaps the most intelligent member of that most intelligent avian family, the crows. Ravens are startlingly clever. Last year, I went to a quarry in the Forest of Dean. It soon became clear that a pair of Raven were breeding here and, sure enough, a vast mess of twigs suspended in a cliff crag looked like a safe bet for an active nest. I sat quietly and waited, confident that, given time, the birds would return to their dwelling in the sheer rock. What happened instead was considerably more surprising....

Heraldry and Heronries

Now, as they have done for thousands of years, herons flop from their winter ditches and ponds to refurnish vast stick platforms in their high woodland heronries; primal, haphazard places filled with noise and droppings. Vast, scruffy nests vie for space in the canopy and the adults, with their crown feathers now raised, posture and strut in a bid to maintain their tiny territories.
