Winter Flocks
Added 17/12/2012 to General News
With Christmas fast approaching you may already be getting a bit fed up of the crowds, present wrapping and constant naff festive music! If you need a break maybe you could consider going and seeing some winter wildlife spectacles or how about doing a bit of edible decorating for the birds in your garden?

During the late autumn and early winter months birds can sometimes find themselves in a bit of a jam either from severe weather or the failure of a food crop and need to make a swift exit away from their normal wintering grounds, this is known as an irruption. This winter the irruptive behaviour of jays migrating into the UK is a sign that their favourite food, acorns, is in short supply on the continent. The jay is usually a sedentary species that isn't fond of crossing open water so to cross the North Sea into the UK, suggests a major shortage in food, they may be disappointed when they arrive and find our crop is also poor. The arrival of bramblings in significant numbers may also reflect a problem with the beech mast crop in Scandinavia and a 'waxwing winter' can reflect issues with berry and fruit crops.

With Halloween and long dark nights fast approaching what better time to talk about creatures of the night, well sort of! I have always been fascinated by owls and seeing them in the wild never fails to excite. In the last few weeks i’ve managed some encounters with our three most common owls in lowland England, the little, tawny and barn. Whilst tawny owls are almost totally nocturnal, little and barn owls are better described as crepuscular creatures, being most active in low light conditions around dawn and dusk. However, both species will venture out in broad daylight.

It’s a hard life for a dragonfly!
Over the last couple of weeks i’ve been marvelling at the precision flying that the local hobby pair have been so brilliantly showing off. The large numbers of dragonflies were providing them and their noisy young with plenty of food in the September sunshine. I’m hoping they will stay with us for a couple of weeks yet!
Dragonflies have also found themselves on....
Eaten Alive!

You may know what I mean if you have ventured out anywhere in the evenings this summer! Mosquitoes and biting midges have been having a fiesta this year, lot’s of water for them to reproduce in followed by warm temperatures to get them airbourne in wave after wave, ideal conditions for them, much to our discomfort. Helping out on a bat survey at 3am seemed like a good idea....

Helping out on a bat survey at 3am seemed like a good idea at the time, glad I had a long sleeved top otherwise I would been drained! Despite the bites, getting up at that time did have it’s highlights, not just with bat activity but also some....

Despite a few promising days of sunshine we’re still experiencing some severe conditions for June, especially in West Wales where the Springwatch team have been hit by the flash floods. The whole production office was under water, you may have seen the devastating scenes on the show or their website.
