We have been following the reports of migrant birds arriving across the UK. April is the key month for migration in the UK and a great time to get out and about to watch the summer visitors arriving. The swallow is perhaps the species which most people look forward to seeing during the spring time and they are now back in the UK. An interesting project set up by Birdlife International and the RSPB is Spring Alive which asks observers across Europe to submit their sightings of the swallow, swift, cuckoo, white stork and bee-eater.

In between my first large solo show for a couple of years, in late November whilst leading of group of enthusiastic painters, i came across a line of Crab Apple trees, that were a blaze of fiery orange fruit. As i sat nearby, populations of Blackbirds in took in turns to bound in and feed, some feeding from hanging fruit, some stripping smaller apples clean off before heading into the cover of nearby Scots Pines to feed.

On Saturday the 4th of February Simon and I set out in sub zero temperatures to visit the Festival of Birds at Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in Slimbridge.
The reason for our trip was to open the newly refurbished hide and otter holt kindly sponsored by Zeiss.
The Trust was founded by the late Sir Peter Scott in 1946, and has become famous for its spectacular array of wildfowl including swans, geese and ducks.

Well, what awful weather we've had today in Suffolk, and by the sound of it pretty much most of the UK has been suffering too.
There wasn't much point in putting the trail cam out today so I've put it out this evening instead. Hopefully the foxes will visit and that will be another species crossed off the list!
