Somerset Levels - Crane Reintroduction Project

Just added a new article from Michael Leigh-Mallory about the reintroduction of Cranes to the Somerset levels.

 

"Strange things are happening in Somerset. Men and women dressed in grey suits, tape recordings of Tractors and low flying aircraft and names like Michael, Dennis, Twinkle and Clarence. Sounds like a page from Denys Watkins Pitchford BB writing one of those fantastic children’s books back in the 1950s. Recordings of foxes and grey men teaching the kids what to avoid in the big wide world. "The birds are around four feet tall and you can hear their trumpeting calls three miles away!" a local exclaimed.

Well how could I resist, my curiosity was overcome and I just had to explore these strange happenings for myself and Wildlife Whisperer.

I am sure you might have guessed already I am referring to the Crane Reintroduction program on the Somerset levels. The skies were blue and the sun shining as I set off for a secret location on the Somerset Levels to meet Damon Bridge from the RSPB. Damon’s role is to act as the hub of the project - making sure everyone involved knows what is going on and that it is all running smoothly. He is also responsible for project community awareness work in Somerset, construction of the...."
