Otters In My Garden!
Added 25/05/2012 to Simon's Blog
With this gorgeous spell of weather, the brook that runs across our garden has at last dropped back to a level that leaves the occasional exposed beach of gravel and mud. A quick peek yesterday evening revealed some very fresh otter footprints and so it was time to set up the Bushnell trailcam.
And here is the result.
It’s so lovely to see my local otters active by day and such a thrill to know they are happily going about their business despite a family of humans (us!) living within 30 metres of their main highway. The camera is back in position now, so with luck we will have some more views over the weekend. I also spotted some new footprints in the soil but will hold back on saying what I think they belong to until I capture the creature that made them on camera!

Wonderful! My wife Jackie and I were lucky to be able to watch an otter for 45 minutes from our bedroom window a week ago, although to be fair we were staying in a cottage at Lochdon on the Isle of Mull at the time, so that's not quite the same as being able to see one from our own home. But since we heard your talk about otter spotting at the Excel centre last January, we've enjoyed eight otter sightings, perhaps the most exciting being an otter on the ice at Shapwick Heath in Somerset this February...
